How to Cancel ChatGPT Plus on Web, iPhone and Android

How to cancel ChatGPT Plus on the website, through the iPhone App Store or Google Play, plus what happens to your chats and access after you cancel.

How to Cancel ChatGPT Plus on Web, iPhone and Android

Key takeaways

  • If you subscribed on the ChatGPT website, cancel from your account settings on the web.
  • If you subscribed in the iPhone app, cancel in iPhone Settings under your name, then Subscriptions.
  • If you subscribed in the Android app, cancel in the Google Play Store under Payments & subscriptions.
  • Cancelling usually keeps Plus until the end of the period you've paid for, and your account and chats stay unless you delete them.

To cancel ChatGPT Plus, cancel it in the same place you started it. If you subscribed on the ChatGPT website, sign in on the web, open your account settings, find your plan or subscription, and choose to cancel. If you subscribed in the iPhone app, go to Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions → ChatGPT → Cancel Subscription. If you subscribed in the Android app, open the Play Store → profile picture → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions.

That first question, "where did I subscribe?", is the one that catches most people. A Plus plan bought through Apple or Google can't be cancelled on the ChatGPT website, and a plan bought on the website won't show up in your phone's subscription list.

Cancelling usually keeps Plus active until the end of the period you've paid for. Your account and chats stay where they are. Here's how to handle every case.

Find out where you're billed for ChatGPT Plus#

Before you look for a cancel button, work out who is charging you. It takes a minute and saves a lot of clicking around.

  • Check your bank or card statement. A charge billed by Apple usually shows Apple's name. A charge billed through Google Play usually mentions Google. A charge billed directly by the company usually shows OpenAI or ChatGPT.
  • Search your email. Look for "ChatGPT" or "OpenAI" receipts. An Apple receipt, a Google Play receipt or a receipt from the company itself tells you which route you used.
  • Check your phone's subscription list. If ChatGPT appears in iPhone Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions, Apple bills you. If it appears in the Play Store's Subscriptions list, Google bills you.
Where you subscribed Who bills you Where to cancel
ChatGPT website The company, directly Account settings on the website
iPhone or iPad app Apple iPhone Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions
Android app Google Play Play Store → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions
A team or business workspace Your organization Ask your workspace admin

If you can't find the charge anywhere, our guide on how to find every subscription you're paying for walks through statements, receipts and app store lists in more detail.

How to cancel ChatGPT Plus on the website#

This is the route if you signed up on chatgpt.com on a computer or in a phone browser. It's often the fastest way, because you can do it from any device.

  1. Go to chatgpt.com in a browser and sign in with the account that has Plus.
  2. Open your profile menu (usually your name or picture in a corner of the screen).
  3. Open Settings, then look for the section about your account, plan or subscription.
  4. Choose the option to manage your subscription. This may open a separate billing page.
  5. Select Cancel plan or a similarly named option, and confirm.

When you're done, the billing page should show the date your plan ends instead of a renewal date. Take a screenshot and keep any confirmation email.

Menus change, so check OpenAI's help page if yours looks different. The key idea stays the same: plan and billing settings live under your account, not inside a chat.

If the web page says you're billed elsewhere#

If the website tells you your subscription is managed through Apple or Google, or you can't find any cancel option, you almost certainly subscribed in a mobile app. Skip to the iPhone or Android section below.

How to cancel ChatGPT Plus on iPhone or iPad#

If you subscribed inside the ChatGPT app on an iPhone or iPad, Apple handles the billing. That means you have to cancel through Apple, even though ChatGPT also has a website.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap [your name] at the top.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Tap ChatGPT.
  5. Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.

You can also manage Apple subscriptions in a browser at https://apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions after signing in with your Apple Account.

After you cancel, the subscription page shows when your access ends. You'll keep Plus until the end of the paid period.

If you don't see ChatGPT in the list, make sure you're signed in with the Apple Account that paid for it. If you share purchases through Family Sharing, the family organizer may be the one billed. For a fuller walkthrough of Apple's subscription menus, see how to cancel subscriptions on iPhone.

What if I only use the website but paid through Apple?#

It happens a lot. You subscribe once in the iPhone app, then mostly use ChatGPT on a laptop. The website will show you as a Plus user, but Apple is still the one charging you. Cancel in your iPhone settings, not on the website.

How to cancel ChatGPT Plus on Android#

If you subscribed in the ChatGPT app on an Android phone, Google Play bills you.

  1. Open the Google Play Store app.
  2. Tap your profile picture.
  3. Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
  4. Choose ChatGPT.
  5. Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.

You can also do this on the web at https://play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions, signed in with the Google account that pays.

Two things to remember. Uninstalling the app does not cancel the subscription. And if you have more than one Google account on your phone, each one has its own list, so check the right one. Our guide to cancelling subscriptions on Android and Google Play covers both in detail.

Team and business workspaces#

If you use ChatGPT through a team or business workspace, the subscription usually isn't yours to cancel. The workspace is paid for by your organization and managed by its admin.

  • If you're a member, leaving the workspace or asking the admin to remove you doesn't change any personal plan you might also have. Ask your admin how seats are handled.
  • If you're the admin, billing and seat settings are normally in the workspace's admin or billing settings rather than in your personal account. Reducing seats or cancelling the workspace plan affects everyone in it, so tell your team first.
  • If you have both a personal Plus plan and a workspace seat, you may be paying twice for overlapping access. Check which one you actually need.

Because workspace plans vary, check OpenAI's help pages for the current admin steps. If you're tracking several tools for a small business, it helps to keep every seat and plan in one list with its owner and renewal date.

What happens after you cancel ChatGPT Plus#

Cancelling stops the next renewal. It doesn't usually cut you off straight away.

  • You keep Plus until the period ends. If your plan renews on the 14th, you can usually keep using Plus features until then.
  • Then you move to the free plan. Your account stays open. You just lose the paid features.
  • Your chats stay. Cancelling a subscription isn't the same as deleting your account. Your chat history, settings and any saved items generally remain unless you delete them yourself.
  • No automatic refund. Cancelling stops future charges. It doesn't return money for the current period.

Deleting your account is a separate action with bigger consequences. If that's what you want, check OpenAI's help page first, and cancel any paid plan through the right channel before you do. Deleting the account on the website won't necessarily stop an Apple or Google Play subscription, so cancel that one in your phone settings too.

Asking for a refund#

If you were charged for a renewal you didn't mean to keep:

  • Bought through Apple: request a refund at https://reportaproblem.apple.com. Sign in, choose "I'd like to", then Request a refund. Apple decides, and refunds aren't guaranteed. Our guide to getting a refund for an App Store subscription explains the process.
  • Bought through Google Play: use the refund or help options in the Play Store, or contact the developer.
  • Bought on the website: check OpenAI's help page for how to contact support about billing.

Ask promptly and explain clearly what happened. If you're charged after a cancellation you can prove, and support can't help, contact your bank or card issuer.

A worked example: what Plus costs you over a year#

AI subscriptions tend to pile up quietly, and a single plan adds up faster than it feels.

Say you pay $20 a month for ChatGPT Plus. Over a year that's $20 × 12 = $240.

Now say you also tried a second AI assistant at a similar price and forgot about it. That's another $240, or $480 a year in total for two tools that mostly overlap.

Scenario Monthly Yearly
One AI plan $20 $20 × 12 = $240
Two overlapping AI plans $40 $40 × 12 = $480
One plan, used 6 months then cancelled $20 $20 × 6 = $120

The last row is the useful one. If you only need Plus for a project, subscribe for the months you need it and cancel straight away, so it ends on its own when the paid period runs out. If you're weighing several tools, our guide on deciding which AI subscriptions to keep gives you a simple framework.

How to get ChatGPT Plus back later#

If you change your mind, resubscribing is simple.

  • Before your paid period ends: you can often turn renewal back on from the same place you cancelled, whether that's the website, iPhone Settings or the Play Store.
  • After it ends: sign in and upgrade again from inside ChatGPT. You'll be asked how to pay.

Pick your payment route deliberately. If you upgrade inside the iPhone app, Apple will bill you, and you'll need to cancel through Apple next time. If you upgrade on the website, you'll manage it on the website. Prices and plans can differ between routes and change over time, so check what you're shown before you confirm.

Troubleshooting common problems#

Problem Likely cause Fix
No cancel option on the website Billed through Apple or Google Play Cancel in iPhone Settings or the Play Store
ChatGPT not in iPhone Subscriptions Different Apple Account, or billed on the web Check the account; cancel on the website
ChatGPT not in Play Store list Different Google account, or billed elsewhere Switch accounts; check your statement
Still charged after deleting the app Deleting the app doesn't cancel Cancel in the right place
Charged twice A personal plan plus another plan or workspace Check every route and cancel the extra one
Charged after cancelling The renewal went through first Ask for a refund; contact your card issuer if needed

If you're seeing charges you can't explain at all, collect the dates and amounts from your statement before you contact anyone. It makes the conversation much quicker.

Keep track of when it renews#

Most unwanted ChatGPT Plus charges aren't about a hard cancellation process. They happen because the renewal date slips by.

The manual fix is simple: write down the plan, the price, where you're billed and the renewal date, then set a calendar alert a few days before. Do the same for any other AI tools you're trying.

If you'd rather not manage that yourself, Monthlee is an iPhone app that keeps your subscriptions, bills and free trials in one list and reminds you on the day or 1, 2, 3 or 7 days before each charge. You add ChatGPT Plus in one tap, and it never asks for a bank login. Its cancel guides also give you the steps and links when you decide a plan has to go.

The bottom line#

To cancel ChatGPT Plus, first work out who bills you. Website subscriptions are cancelled in your account settings on the web. iPhone subscriptions are cancelled in Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions. Android subscriptions are cancelled in the Play Store under Payments & subscriptions. Team and business plans go through your workspace admin.

After you cancel, you keep Plus until the end of the paid period, then drop back to the free plan with your account and chats intact.

Check your statement now, cancel in the right place, and save the confirmation.

Frequently asked questions

How do I cancel ChatGPT Plus?

Cancel it where you started it. If you subscribed on the website, open your account settings on chatgpt.com and choose the option to manage or cancel your plan. If you subscribed in the iPhone app, cancel in Settings, your name, Subscriptions. If you used the Android app, cancel in the Play Store under Payments & subscriptions.

Why can't I cancel ChatGPT Plus on the website?

You probably subscribed through the iPhone App Store or Google Play. Those subscriptions are billed by Apple or Google, so they have to be cancelled in your iPhone settings or in the Play Store, not on the ChatGPT website.

Do I lose my chats if I cancel ChatGPT Plus?

Cancelling Plus doesn't delete your account. Your account and chat history generally stay, and you move back to the free plan when your paid period ends. Deleting your account is a separate step, so check OpenAI's help page before doing that.

Does deleting the ChatGPT app cancel my subscription?

No. Deleting the app from your phone doesn't stop the subscription. You have to cancel it on the website, in iPhone Settings or in the Google Play Store, depending on where you subscribed.

Will I get a refund if I cancel ChatGPT Plus?

Cancelling stops the next renewal but doesn't automatically refund past payments. For App Store purchases you can ask Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com; for other purchases, check OpenAI's help page or Google Play's refund options.

Know every charge before it lands.

Monthlee keeps your subscriptions, bills and free trials in one calm list and reminds you before each charge. No bank login. Free for up to 5 subscriptions.
