How to Cancel Xbox Game Pass on Web, Console and More

Key takeaways

  • The quickest way to cancel Xbox Game Pass is at account.microsoft.com/services: find Game Pass, select Manage, then cancel or turn off recurring billing.
  • On an Xbox console, press the Xbox button and go to Profile & system, Settings, Account, Subscriptions, then choose Game Pass and follow the steps.
  • Turning off recurring billing stops the next charge and keeps your Game Pass benefits until the current period ends.
  • Microsoft may refund your most recent renewal if you cancel within 30 days of that charge, once per Microsoft account per subscription product.
  • Game Pass bought through a retailer, carrier or app store may not show in your Microsoft account, so cancel with that seller.

To cancel Xbox Game Pass, sign in at account.microsoft.com/services with the Microsoft account that has the subscription. Find Game Pass, select Manage, then choose the option to cancel or turn off recurring billing and follow the prompts. This works for Essential, Premium, Ultimate and PC Game Pass, and it takes a couple of minutes from a phone or computer.

You can also do it on the console: press the Xbox button, then go to Profile & system → Settings → Account → Subscriptions, choose Game Pass and follow the steps to cancel.

Turning off recurring billing stops the next charge, and you keep playing until the period you've paid for ends. If you bought Game Pass through a retailer, mobile carrier or app store, cancel with them instead.

The fastest way to cancel Xbox Game Pass: your Microsoft account#

Game Pass is a Microsoft subscription, so it lives in your Microsoft account alongside anything else you pay Microsoft for.

  1. Open a browser and go to account.microsoft.com/services.
  2. Sign in with the Microsoft account you use on Xbox. If you have more than one, use the one that's being charged.
  3. Find your Game Pass subscription in the list.
  4. Select Manage.
  5. Choose Cancel subscription or Turn off recurring billing, depending on which option you see.
  6. Follow the prompts and confirm.

When you're done, the subscription should show an end or expiration date instead of a renewal date. Microsoft's support pages say that if the subscription now shows Turn on recurring billing, it's already set to end, and you won't be charged after that date.

Menus change from time to time, so if your screens look different, check Xbox Support's article on subscription cancellations and refunds for the current steps.

Turn off recurring billing vs cancel now#

You may see two different outcomes, and they're worth understanding before you click.

Option What happens Best for
Turn off recurring billing No more charges; you keep Game Pass until the current period ends Most people: you keep what you've paid for
Cancel immediately (if offered) Access ends now; you may get a refund if eligible You were just charged by mistake

Xbox's support page says turning off recurring billing stops future charges while you keep your benefits until the current period ends. It also says you may be eligible to cancel immediately with a refund, but not all subscription charges can be refunded.

How to cancel Xbox Game Pass on your Xbox console#

If you're already on the couch with a controller, you can do it from the console.

  1. Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide.
  2. Go to Profile & system, then Settings.
  3. Select Account, then Subscriptions.
  4. Choose your Game Pass subscription.
  5. Follow the steps to cancel. If you're eligible, you may be prompted to start a refund.

The Subscriptions screen also shows your plan, its expiration date, your billing history and how you pay, so it's a good place to check what you're on even if you don't cancel.

This is the path Xbox Support's article on viewing and managing subscriptions describes. Xbox console menus are updated regularly, and the exact wording of the cancel buttons on the console can differ from the website, so if anything looks unfamiliar, use the website route instead. It reaches the same subscription.

On a Windows PC or phone#

There's no need to use the Xbox app for this. On a PC or phone, open a browser and use account.microsoft.com/services, which is the same account page described above and works the same way for PC Game Pass.

If you bought Game Pass through a retailer, carrier or app store#

Not everyone pays Microsoft directly. Game Pass is sold on prepaid cards and codes, and some people get it through a mobile carrier or another partner. Microsoft's support answers note that if you started Game Pass through a retailer, mobile carrier or app store, it may not show on the Microsoft account services page, and you cancel with that provider.

  • Prepaid card or code: a code adds a fixed amount of time. If you redeemed a code and never turned on recurring billing, Game Pass simply ends when that time runs out. If you were asked to add a payment method so it would continue, check your Microsoft account and turn off recurring billing there.
  • Mobile carrier or bundle: sign in to your carrier's account and look for add-ons or included services, or contact their support.
  • Apple App Store or Google Play: if a charge for Game Pass comes from Apple or Google, cancel it there. On iPhone, that's Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions; on Android, the Play Store → profile picture → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions. Our guides to cancelling subscriptions on iPhone and cancelling on Android and Google Play walk through both.

To tell who bills you, check your bank or card statement. A charge with Microsoft or Xbox in the name usually means Microsoft bills you directly; a charge from your carrier or an app store means they do.

What happens after you cancel Xbox Game Pass#

Here's what to expect once recurring billing is off or the subscription has ended.

  • You keep access until the end of the paid period if you turned off recurring billing.
  • Game Pass library games stop working. The Xbox Game Pass page says you have access to games in the library until the subscription is cancelled or expires. Games can also leave the library on their own while you're subscribed.
  • Games you bought stay yours. Anything you purchased outright isn't part of the subscription.
  • Member discounts end. Game Pass plans include discounts on games and add-ons, and those go with the membership.
  • Other plan features end too, such as cloud gaming or online multiplayer, depending on what your plan included.

Microsoft's pages don't spell out what happens to your save data in every case, so if you care about a particular game's progress, check Xbox Support or the game's own help pages before your plan ends.

Before you turn off billing: a quick checklist#

  1. Check which Microsoft account is being charged, especially if your household has more than one Xbox profile.
  2. Note your current expiration date on the Subscriptions screen, so you know how long you have left to play.
  3. Finish or wrap up any Game Pass game you care about, or decide whether to buy it.
  4. Check for a second subscription, such as an old plan on another account or a code that's still adding time.
  5. Turn off recurring billing, then check the subscription shows an end date and keep any confirmation email.

Thinking of buying a game before you leave?#

If there's one Game Pass game you still want to finish, check its store price while you're still a member. Buying it while your membership discount applies may cost less than buying it later.

Xbox Game Pass refunds#

Microsoft's Game Pass page says that if you cancel within 30 days of a recurring charge, you may be entitled to a refund of your most recent recurring billing charge. This is limited to one time per Microsoft account, per subscription product.

The cancel flow tells you whether you qualify. Some countries have additional rules for prorated refunds, which Microsoft lists on its support pages. Purchases through a retailer, carrier or app store follow that seller's refund process; for Apple, that's https://reportaproblem.apple.com, and our guide to App Store subscription refunds explains it.

A worked example: the renewal you didn't notice#

Say you pay, for example, $20 a month for Game Pass and stopped playing in the summer. Three months go by before you notice.

  • What you paid without playing: 3 × $20 = $60.
  • What a refund can recover: at most the most recent charge, $20, if you cancel within 30 days of it and haven't used that one-time refund before.
  • What you still lose: the other $40.

Over a full year, $20 a month is $20 × 12 = $240. If you only play heavily for a few months a year, subscribing just for those months and turning off recurring billing straight away means it ends on its own. The same idea works for streaming; see our guide to rotating subscriptions.

Switching Game Pass plans instead of cancelling#

If cost is the issue rather than Game Pass itself, a cheaper plan may do. Game Pass currently comes in Essential, Premium and Ultimate tiers on console, plus PC Game Pass for PC. The plans differ in what's included, so compare them on the Xbox Game Pass page before you switch, and check how the change affects your billing date.

Troubleshooting: when cancelling Game Pass doesn't work#

What you see What it usually means What to do
"Turn on recurring billing" Already set to end Nothing; it won't renew
Game Pass isn't in your Microsoft account Different account, or bought through a retailer, carrier or app store Check other accounts and your receipts
The account page keeps reloading A browser or sign-in issue Try another browser or a private window, or use the console route
Charged after cancelling The renewal processed first Check refund eligibility in the cancel flow
Two Game Pass charges Two Microsoft accounts, or two plans Check account.microsoft.com/services on each account

If you still can't cancel, Microsoft has a troubleshooting article for subscriptions you can't cancel, and its Contact Microsoft Support page. If a charge keeps appearing and support can't help, contact your bank or card issuer. For tracking down unfamiliar charges in general, see what to do about a subscription charge you don't recognise.

Keep track of when Game Pass renews#

Game Pass is one of those subscriptions that keeps renewing long after you've stopped playing, because nothing reminds you it's there.

The manual fix: put your renewal date in your calendar with a reminder a few days before. When it fires, ask whether you've played anything from the library since the last charge.

If you track several subscriptions, Monthlee is an iPhone app that keeps them in one list and reminds you on the day or 1, 2, 3 or 7 days before each charge, without linking a bank account. You add Game Pass in one tap, and the monthly "still using it?" check-ins are a useful nudge for subscriptions like this.

The bottom line#

To cancel Xbox Game Pass, go to account.microsoft.com/services, find Game Pass, select Manage and turn off recurring billing or cancel. On a console, use Xbox button → Profile & system → Settings → Account → Subscriptions. If a retailer, carrier or app store bills you, cancel with them.

Turning off recurring billing keeps your access until the paid period ends, so you can do it the moment you decide. If you were just charged by mistake, cancel within 30 days and check whether the one-time refund applies.

Frequently asked questions

How do I cancel my Xbox Game Pass subscription?

Sign in at account.microsoft.com/services with the Microsoft account that has Game Pass, find the subscription, select Manage and choose the option to cancel or turn off recurring billing. On a console, press the Xbox button, go to Profile & system, Settings, Account, Subscriptions, choose Game Pass and follow the steps.

If I cancel Game Pass, do I lose access right away?

Not if you turn off recurring billing. That stops the next charge and you keep your benefits until the current period ends. You may also be offered an immediate cancellation with a refund if you're eligible, which ends access sooner.

Can I get a refund for Xbox Game Pass?

Possibly. Microsoft says you may be entitled to a refund of your most recent recurring billing charge if you cancel within 30 days after that payment, limited to one time per Microsoft account per subscription product. Not all charges can be refunded, and the cancel flow shows whether you qualify.

What happens to my Game Pass games when I cancel?

You lose access to games from the Game Pass library when the subscription ends. Games you bought separately stay yours. If you want to keep playing a Game Pass game, you'd need to buy it.

Why can't I find Game Pass in my Microsoft account?

You may be signed in with a different Microsoft account, or you may have bought Game Pass through a retailer, mobile carrier or app store, which may not show on the Microsoft account services page. Check your receipts and cancel with whoever bills you.

Know every charge before it lands.

Monthlee keeps your subscriptions, bills and free trials in one calm list and reminds you before each charge. No bank login. Free for up to 5 subscriptions.
